What happened to DeafRead Custom?

*wail* I've been going through life quite happily not having to pollute my eyes with hate-filled blogs until this afternoon. My cookies for DeafRead Custom were completely wiped out... both on my pager and on my computer. WHAT HAPPENED, DEAFREAD??? Please restore the cookies - stat!

Most likely, when you closed your browser, it erased all your cookies. Change this option in your browser.

We plan to develop a login system eliminating the need for cookies.

aww...It is a pain, I know. But, you seem like a very smart cookie. Surely, you're smart enough to skip the blogs you are not interested in, right? :)

Thank you, Tayler.
But that's not the issue. I know my way around computers. My browser is set up to keep cookies. I have not discarded any cookies. I'm the only one with access to my computer, so no one did anything to my settings. All my other cookies are present, including the custom DeafRead color skin.
The same is true of my pager. It retains cookies and has not been turned off.
The problem is not on my end.

Hi Tayler,

Albeit lowering from "Medium High" to "Low" in Tools's "Privy," my Verizon's Internet Security blocks the browser to change. I threw into the towel.

Let us keep "DeafRead" for all v/blogs. Why should we divide ourselves by using separate aggregators? If a blog about sports is not readers's tea cup, they can use the sidebar to scroll down until they reach which blogs they want to read. Pure and simple.

Divided we fall.
United we stand.

It seems the cookie was set to expire in 7 days. We are looking into it. Thanks for bring it to our attention. In the future, you may want to contact us directly by using this e-mail form.

Whew, I'm not the only one going nuts! Even though my browser has been set to retain all my cookies, I keep losing my DeafRead Custom!

Some blogs out there got cookie killers.

The cookie expiration date has been changed to expire in 6 months. Also every time DeafRead is visited, the expiration date is updated for another 6 months. Again, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Like I said above, implementing a login system will eliminate the need for cookies altogther.

Thank you so much, Tayler. I appreciate your checking and your explanation!

Everyone who commented, I'm moderating from my pager and I can't see the full comment. I'm sorry about the delay. I will be on the computer and able to moderate comments better within 24 hours.

Hi Tayler
Why do you need a login to remove cookies????? It is a BIG hassle having to type your username and password each time you check the Deafread. I check Deafread a few times a day for latest entries. What you are using is really neat. No custom stuff for me as I am content with the basic blue screen and with the 'hide' mode, which I don't use. I enjoy learning about different issues including CI implants, access, and other topics. I like to screen ALL the titles / precis (brief summary) and click on those that gets my attention or curiosity.

Candy, thank you for your confidence in my intelligence. I do exactly that. However, I see absolutely no reason to have to endure blogs that are hate-filled and/or completely irresponsible on my screen for even one second. Thanks but no thanks. Blogs that I simply don't agree with or blogs that don't interest me, I skip those without hiding them. The disrespectful and and vitriolic blogs get hidden - stat. I'm not going to engage in debate on which bloggers are behaving irresponsibly or discuss that in depth. That's all I have to say on the subject.

Jean, I agree yet disagree. Again, it boils down to the difference between those who can dialogue and disagree with respect and those who call others names and use inflammatory language to shock and anger. The latter is a group I don't want to even see at all.

just deaf, I agree. I hate the idea of logging in too.

Patty, whew, I'm not the only one. :)

Tayler, thanks again.

Just Deaf and Saunière,

You WON'T need to login to enjoy DeafRead.

Logging in would be for those who want to customize DeafRead via DeafRead Custom. Cookies will inevitably get erased at one point (new computer?). Also a login system enables you to use other computers (on the road?) and still be able to use your customized list.

Tayler,
But that's the point - I WANT to be able to customize DeafRead without having to log in. How about leaving the cookies after implementing the login system? Give people options?

tayler said...

I don't know. Not everyone is as tech-savvy as you are. What if they choose the cookies option and have it erased somehow? They'll blame us. :)

With the login system, your information will never be lost. Heck, we'll have a "Remember me" checkbox that uses a cookie to remember your login for, say, a month?
